Wake Tech is very pleased to announce the Stephen C. Scott Presidential Scholars Program.


This new program, much more than a scholarship fund, seeks to engage students and support them in reaching their full potential. The program is made possible by a gift honoring President Scott and recognizing his integrity, vision, and leadership. "Scott Scholars" will be students who exhibit those qualities in their pursuit of higher education.  

 

The program will provide tuition assistance along with a multitude of benefits not available in other programs.

Distinguished Young Women Scholarship - This scholarship opportunity is for high school females graduating in 2013, reside in Wake County, is a US citizen, and have a 3.0 or higher GPA. Applicants should excel in the classroom, be physically fit, like to serve the community and have a special talent such as playing an instrument, singing, monologue, dancing etc.... HSHS Golden Hawks Band Spring Concerts on May 8 and May 22.
 
The Holly Springs High School Concert Band and Chamber Ensembles will present their Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 8, at 7 PM in the auditorium.  The program is free and open to the public.  The 75 piece Concert Band, which consists mainly of freshman and sophomores, recently received a "Straight Superior" rating from four adjudicators at the North Carolina Music Performance Adjudication.  Their program will consist of music from the Civil War, the recent Pixar movies, Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven", and a special selection involving faculty members from HSHS.  The chamber program will include up to 15 different groups of talented individuals performing solo's, duets, and other ensembles.
 
The Holly Springs High School Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble will present their Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 22, at 7 PM in the auditorium.  The program is free and open to the public.  The 50 piece Wind Ensemble, which is the premier instrumental ensemble at HSHS, also received a "Superior" rating, in Level VI (the highest level for high school) at MPA.  Their program will feature music from the Olympics, Star Wars, and all the branches of the Armed Forces.  In addition to this they will feature senior All-State hornist Anson Carroll.  The 20 piece Jazz Ensemble, will feature junior All-State guitarist Eli Wittmann.

 


2012 Special Olympics


>Athletics Open House. On May 17th Holly Springs High School Athletic Department will be holding an open house for all incoming freshman and their parents/guardians at 7pm in the gymnasium.  The Golden Hawks Club and all head coaches will be in attendance.  During this time all dates regarding tryouts, summer workouts, and physicals will be given, as well as addressing any questions you may have.  This will be a great time to meet all the coaches and find out about the Golden Hawks Club and how they support Holly Springs Athletics.

>Spring Art Show! Please support the work of talented visual art students by coming to see the Holly Springs High School Student Art Show featuring students from the 2011-2012 school year. Projects in drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics will be on display from Art I, II, III, IV, Honors, AP Studio Art, Painting, Independent study, Sculpture and Ceramics I, and National Art Honor Society. The exhibit will be displayed Friday May 18th from 6-8pm in the school cafeteria. Admission is free!

>PTSA General Membership Meeting. The next HSHS PTSA General Membership meeting will include officer elections for the 2012-2013 school year. The slate of officers can be viewed on the PTSA website. Following this brief meeting, PTSA will host a guest speaker from The College Foundation of NC. Sarita Broadway, CFNC Senior Regional Representative from the College Foundation, Inc., will discuss the following topics:  the college admission process, online applications, setting up a CFNC account, SAT testing, timelines for freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.  The PTSA General Membership meeting will take place Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in the HSHS Media Center @ 6:30.

 

>Wake County Public School System Partners with Attorney General’s Office and Facebook Social Media Safety Education

(Cary)  The Wake County Public School System is partnering with Attorney General Roy Cooper’s office and Facebook to host a town hall for parents on social networking safety on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:00 PM at Panther Creek High School in Cary.

 


Experts from Facebook, the Attorney General’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation Computer Crimes Unit will show parents and students how to be safe when using social networking websites and answer questions from the audience.

 


“As we continue to provide and encourage students to use new technology it is imperative that those students and their families know how to use the tools effectively and safely,” Superintendent Tony Tata said.

For those who can’t make it out the event will also be streamed live on the Wake County Public Schools Facebook page, the Attorney General’s Facebook page, and on WRAL.com.
You can also submit questions ahead of time via the Attorney General’s Facebook page or Twitter.

>Annual Physical Night! Holly Springs High School will be having their annual physical night on May 24 from 6:30-8:30 at the Holly Springs office of Carolina Family Practice and Sports Medicine. The cost is $20 cash or check (payable to CFPSM) which will be donated back to the HSHS Sports Medicine program. All athletes need to bring their completed WCPSS physical form with them. Fall athletes should arrive at 6:30, Winter athletes at 7:00, and Spring athletes at 7:30. Thank you for supporting the HSHS Sports Medicine program!

>Hot off the Press!!  The HSHS Spring Sports Programs are available now!!!  They are $5.00! >State Employees’ Credit Union “People Helping People”  Four-Year Scholarship- Discipline: General; Amount: $10,000 (payable at $1,250 per semester); Requirements: US citizen and resident of NC; Senior who plans to attend one of the 16 constituent campuses of the UNC System as a full-time student. The recipient agrees to continue as a full-time student in good standing with the same University for up to eight consecutive semesters.   Applicant must have a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher and deserving of financial aid. Note: There is no formal application. Interested applicants must submit a two page typed essay as to how they best exemplify the philosophy “People Helping People” and have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity and community involvement.  Directions are available in the pink scholarship box in Student Services.   Essay must be submitted to Ms. Burch in Student Services by Tuesday, April 10, 2012.  

 

>2012 HSHS Prom. The 2012 HSHS Prom will be held on Saturday, May 19th from 8 pm - 12 midnight at the Sheraton - Downtown Raleigh.  All fines and fees must be paid prior to purchasing prom tickets.  Jrs/Srs may clear their fines and fees the week of March 26th during HOT lunch.  Prom tickets will go on sale the week of April 9th.  Prom tickets are $20 each.

>Alive at 25. Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for persons 16-24 years of age. In an effort to change the driving behavior, thereby reducing the risks associated with young drivers, the National Safety Council developed Alive at 25. This program zeros in on these drivers. >National Merit Semifinalist Information! Mitchell Brady has advanced to Finalist standing in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program, a distinction that places him in a group of students representing less than one percent of U.S. high school graduating seniors. Mitch is the first Holly Springs High School student to be named a National Merit Finalist. The National Merit Program is the largest of its kind, awarding approximately 8,400 Merit Scholarship awards nationwide.

>STREETSAFE! StreetSafe is a non-profit program offering a unique hands-on driving session designed to make teens safer and more responsible on our roads. Taught by police and fire personal and focusing on parental involvement, our goal is to reduce the number of injuries, deaths and crashes by young, inexperienced drivers. >ACT Information. ACT score reports will be mailed to students approximately five to eight weeks from the date they took the test.  HSHS will not receive scores for distribution.

 

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) -The Federal government mandated the creation of the FAFSA to apply for federal financial aid. Parents and students must submit this form no earlier than January 1.  This application can be completed online at the US Department of Education’s FAFSA website at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students should check college for FAFSA deadlines. Students and parents can create a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to electronically sign the FAFSA.  Students and parents must visit www.pin.ed.gov to create this number.

 

Do you need assistance completing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA)?  CFNC will sponsor FAFSA Day on Saturday, February 18, 2012.  Visit cfnc.org to register and for more information. Items to take to the session:  2011 federal tax returns (for student and parents), FAFSA PINS (four digit ID numbers) for student and parent (visit pin.ed.gov), and 2012-2013 FAFSA on the Web Worksheet (visit fafsa.gov).

 


>Attention Seniors
. 2012 Graduation Cap & Gown Pictures will be taken on Thursday, Feb. 16th.  Please check with any staff member for your scheduled times.  Pictures will be Pre-pay only by check or cash.  Extra order forms can be retrieved from the front office or student services.

 

 

>Late Cap&Gown Orders- Late orders for seniors who have not ordered their cap/gown or other senior items will be handled through the Jostens local website www.trianglegrad.com. Seniors who have not placed an order will be able to order cap&gowns, class rings, graduation announcements, and other senior products from this site.

 


>PSAT Scores - If a student did not receive his/her PSAT scores in advisory on December 14th, the student needs to register on the College Board site. He/she can see their scores an their test answers to review in the book. If more scores arrive later, we will distribute them as soon as possible. Click here to access the College Board site.


>Attention Seniors: We are in the process of making the senior bulletin board. In years past, the bulletin board has reflected seniors as babies. However, this year, we want to recognize you as the beautiful people you are today. Please help us accomplish this task by donating your formal senior picture (the one with the tux or the drape). Please give these pictures directly to your senior advisors (Mrs. Greene or Mrs. Chidwick) or you can drop them off in the envelopes hanging outside their doors 2705 or 2614. Photos will not be returned. We look forward to your participation.

>Volunteers: All continuing volunteers approved last year MUST reactivate as a volunteer no later than October 31, 2011. You may go to any WCPSS site and register through the district intranet. After October 31, 2011, individuals previously approved may not volunteer without a new criminal record check. The volunteer system is open daily until October 31, 2011. Starting November 7, 2011, through May 21, 2012, the system will be open on Mondays only.

>Student Insurance: Wake County Board Policy requires that every student participant in the following activities must furnish proof of membership in the student accident insurance program or proof that comparable coverage is carried by another insurance policy:

  • Interscholastic athletic programs
  • Intramural athletic programs
  • Marching bands
  • School patrols
  • Cheerleaders
  • Activities groups making overnight trips or excursion


The WCPSS has selected the Student Insurance Plan with K&K Insurance Group to make reliable overage available to parents. If you don’t have other insurance, this plan may be a resource to consider. The coverage may be purchased at any time during the school year.

>GET A SLICE OF THE PIE!: Papa John’s is partnering with the Wake County Public School System to help raise funds in support our schools. Every second Wednesday of the month Wake County Papa John’s pizza restaurants will be donating a portion of their proceeds to all schools in the Wake County Public School System.

>Drivers Ed: Information about Drivers Ed can be found on the Student Website. New procedures, effective immediately!

Tuesday & Thursday

Students and Parents : NEW PROCEDURES effective immediately:

 

1.      Students complete both the driving and the classroom portion of Driver’s Education.

2.      Students will need to bring in Driver Education Certificate to Ms. Traversi who will give them a Driver Eligibility Certificate.

3.      Students will take the Driver Eligibility Certificate home for a parent signature.

4.      Students will return the signed DEC along with their Birth Certificate and the previous semester’s final grades to Ms. Traversi.

5.      Ms. Traversi will validate the Driver Eligibility Certificate if the student has all of the above named documents.

6.      It is the student’s responsibility to have all necessary documents in order to have their Driver Eligibility Certificate validated.

7.      Certificates are valid for 30 days only. Please submit certificates to DMV before the 30-day deadline.  Eligibility Certificates are limited.

* Previous semester’s final grades: Either a printout from SPAN or a report card can be used but 1st & 2nd quarter, exam, & final grades OR 3rd & 4th quarter, exam, & final grades must be

included.
